What is Bolesławiec pottery?

Bolesławiec pottery is a type of traditional Polish pottery made in the town of Bolesławiec in southwestern Poland.
It is known for its colorful, handmade designs, often featuring blue, white and other traditional patterns.
The pottery is decorated by hand using techniques such as stamping and painting, which gives each piece its own charm.
It is also practical for everyday use, with many pieces suitable for both microwave and dishwasher use.
There are traditional patterns as well as more modern designs, so there is something for many different tastes.
And of course, it makes a very Polish souvenir!
Since I live in Poland, I thought it was finally time to get one for myself too.

Visiting Strefa Bolesławiec in Poznań
📍「 Strefa Bolesławiec」
Address:Romana Maya 1, 61-371 Poznań
The shop is located in Starołęka, a little outside the city centre.
From the Poznań Old Town area, it takes around 30 minutes by tram and on foot.
The area around the shop feels more like a warehouse and industrial area than a tourist destination, so I honestly felt like I was going on a little pottery adventure.

The tram stop is about a 10 minute walk from the shop, and Google Maps worked well for finding the way.
So don’t worry if you feel like you are walking somewhere tourists normally don’t go. 😂
You will eventually find the shop!

A huge pottery shop that feels like a warehouse

My first thought when I arrived was:
“Wow, this is much bigger than I expected!”
The shop is more like a large warehouse combined with a store than a small pottery shop.
There are shelves full of Bolesławiec pottery, and the shop continues much further back than you might expect from the entrance.
I had also visited a Bolesławiec pottery shop closer to Poznań Old Town before, but the selection here felt completely different in size.
One thing I personally liked was that I could take my time and browse without feeling pressured.
There were staff members working around the shop, so it was still easy to ask questions if I needed help.

So many patterns and designs!
This was probably the hardest part.
Every time I thought,
“This one is cute!”
I would see another one and think,
“Wait, this one is cute too…” 😂
There are lots of different patterns, but also many different shapes and sizes.
I really enjoyed picking up the pieces and comparing them in person.
According to the official website, Strefa Bolesławiec carries products from several well known Bolesławiec manufacturers, including Zakłady Ceramiczne Bolesławiec, Manufaktura Bolesławiec, Ceramika Artystyczna, Ceramika Kalich, Ceramika Czaja and Moja Faktoria Bolesławiec.
You can find much more than just plates and mugs too.
There are bowls, vases, kitchen storage containers, baking dishes and other homeware.
I even found some cute non tableware items.

How much does Bolesławiec pottery cost?
The prices depend on the size, shape and complexity of the design.
When I visited, larger plates could cost around PLN 100 to 150, while smaller pieces could be found for less.
I personally prefer simpler designs, and I found plenty of cute pieces in the PLN 50 to 100 range.
There were also small dishes and bowls that were relatively affordable, so you don’t necessarily need to spend a lot to take home a piece of Bolesławiec pottery.
If you already have a particular design or manufacturer in mind, it is worth checking the selection online before visiting.

A small tip about checking the prices
One thing that surprised me was how the prices are displayed.
For many products, you need to check the barcode number on the bottom of the piece and match it with the corresponding number on the shelf.
So if you find something you like, don’t just look at the shelf next to it.
Check the barcode on the actual piece to make sure you have the right price.
It is a little different from shopping at a typical souvenir store, but once you understand how it works, it is easy.
Gift wrapping and taking the pottery home
Since I was buying gifts, I also asked about gift packaging.
The shop offers gift boxes, but the box suggested to me was quite large.
Since I was going to meet my friends in Kraków and had to carry everything on the train, I decided not to use the box.
Instead, I got a paper bag and protective packaging for the pottery.
The protective packaging was free, which was really helpful.
The pottery was wrapped with protective material, so it felt much safer to carry it around.
If you are planning to take Bolesławiec pottery home as a souvenir, this is definitely something worth asking about.

Authenticity card
There was also a card next to the checkout saying that the pottery was authentic.
Since I was giving the pottery to a friend as a souvenir from Poland, I thought it would be a nice little extra, so I took one and put it together with the gift.
According to Strefa Bolesławiec, the shop sells original Bolesławiec pottery from established manufacturers rather than imitations.
So if you are specifically looking for authentic Bolesławiec pottery, this is a good place to browse.

The staff were friendly and spoke English
I was slightly worried before visiting because the shop has more of a warehouse atmosphere and I didn’t see many tourists around.
But the staff member who helped me at the checkout spoke fluent English and was very friendly.
So even if you don’t speak Polish, you should be fine.
Bolesławiec pottery is great for everyday use
One of the things I like about Bolesławiec pottery is that you don’t need a whole matching collection.
Even adding just one cute plate or bowl to your everyday table can make it feel more special.
You can mix it with your existing dishes and still get that lovely Polish pottery feeling.
I actually think this makes it a great souvenir.
You can buy something beautiful in Poland and then continue using it at home instead of leaving it on a shelf as a souvenir.
